Local SEO Grid: How to Read Your Rank Map
ProfilePilot | Aug 26, 2026 | 7 min read
Create a search grid around a store, run a scan, then read the map (your rank at each pin) and the competitor list (who else appears on those pins).
What Local SEO Grid is for
Local SEO Grid (Local Rank Tracker) answers one question: where do we rank on Google Maps for this keyword, from nearby search points?
It drops a grid of pins around a store (for example 5×5), searches your keyword from each pin, and records the local pack. Use it to see where you own the map, where you drop off, and which competitors sit between you and #1.
Open it from the sidebar: Local SEO Grid (or /dashboard/geo-grid).
1. Create a grid
- Give the grid a name that matches how you appear on Google (for example the brand or store name). The map uses this name to find your listing in the pack.
- Search and select an address so the centre is on the real store — do not leave a blank or default map pin.
- Set rows, columns, and spacing (metres). A 5×5 grid at 500–1000 m is a good first scan (25 credits).
- Enter the keyword shoppers would type (for example grocery store or frozen foods).
- Click Create grid.
Name the grid after the brand or store, not a suburb nickname. If the name does not match the Google listing, the map cannot tell which rank is yours and will show N/A.
2. Run a scan and credits
- Select the grid and click Run. Status moves from queued to running to success.
- Each active pin costs one credit. Buy packs from the Credits card if the scan is blocked.
- Wait until status is success before reading the map. A running scan can look empty or incomplete.
- Optional: set Daily, Weekly, or Monthly so the same grid rescans automatically.
3. How to read the map
Each coloured circle is your listing’s rank at that search pin, not the business that came first in Google’s pack.
- If you are #3 at a pin, the circle shows #3 even when someone else is #1 there.
- The small blue number is how many businesses appeared in that pin’s pack (often 9).
- The red H marks the grid centre (the store you searched).
- N/A means your listing (matching the grid name) was not in that pin’s pack.
Colours: green = #1–3, lime = #4–10, amber = #11–20, orange = #21+ or missing.
Click a circle to open your listing at that pin. Hover to see the full pack (winner, you, and everyone else) with their ranks.
4. How to read the competitor list
The right-hand list is every business from every pin, sorted by the rank they had on that pin. It is not a unique league table of competitors.
- The same store can appear many times (once per pin where they showed up).
- A badge of #2 means “they were 2nd on that pin,” not “there should be a #2 circle on the map.”
- Map circles only show your rank. If you are never #2, you will not see a #2 on the map — even if competitors are #2 in the list.
Example: another store can be #1 at every pin while you are #2 or #3 in the list. The map then shows your #2 and #3 circles, not a field of #1s for the pack winner.
5. Competitor Rankings
From a completed scan, open Competitor Rankings for averages across the grid (ratings, review counts, how often each brand appears). That page uses the latest successful scan, not an empty or failed run.
Tips and troubleshooting
- No grids yet: Stay signed in and keep the correct organisation selected, then refresh Local SEO Grid.
- Map is all #1: You were #1 at those pins — or refresh after this update so the map shows your rank, not the pack winner.
- List shows you at #2 but the map does not: Expected on older views. After this update the map paints your rank. The list remains per-pin pack results.
- N/A on many pins: Check the grid name matches Google, or try a closer keyword.
- Wrong city on the map: Search and select the real address before creating the grid. Do not save a default pin.
